Perspective from Japan is leading my 2026 mantra
For those that know me, Japan is my special place. Having lived a past life as a ski-lodge owner, I now try to spend my annual holidays there each year, primarily as a way for me to reset for the year, but - and lets be real - mainly to go snowboarding in that sweet Japan powder.
Without the craziness of running a lodge for 10-12 weeks of the winter season, I’ve noticed I’m now able to spend some real time (amongst the snowboarding!) in bathing myself in appreciating the aesthetic and mood of Japanese architecture - space, restraint, materiality and light always strike me as the key virtues of Japanese design.
I got to shoot a brand new ski-in, ski-out lodge, as well as a small boutique ryokan with an in-house Michelin chef. In the process of shooting these spaces, what stood out to me is the precision and intention in architecture, respect for negative space, and craft over excess. And it made me think about translating this to the way I shoot: cleaner compositions, considered framing (always!) and letting the subject breathe within the frame
Trips like this always feel like a reset. They sharpen my eye, strip things back, and quietly influence the way I shoot once I’m home. That mindset is very much shaping the work I’m doing now — and as I look ahead, my 2026 bookings are officially open. If you’re planning an architectural, accommodation, or editorial shoot, let’s have a chat.
